Guangdong Industrial Design City: Empowering the Home Service Industry through Design Innovation

· NEWS

From a children's hair dryer that precisely controls temperature at around 30 degrees Celsius to hip protection pads that prevent injuries when the elderly fall, "Design+" is reshaping the form and connotation of domestic services with its unique transformative power, emerging as an industrial engine for the high-quality development of the "Guangdong Housekeeping" project.

From November 19 to 21, the Finals of the 4th Guangdong "Guangdong Housekeeping" Vocational Skills Competition will be held in Shunde District, Foshan City. This is not only a competition for skilled talents but also a concentrated review of the effectiveness of the "dual-wheel drive" strategy of "developing both the housekeeping cause and industry". During the event, leaders and guests will visit the Guangdong Industrial Design City to investigate the integrated practice of "Design + Housekeeping" and explore the "Guangdong model" for the innovation of the housekeeping industry.

Cluster Effect: Design-Driven Upgrade of the Housekeeping Industry's Capacity

Guangdong Industrial Design City, an innovation hub gathering 306 design enterprises in its core area, has become a key industrial driver for the "Guangdong Housekeeping" project.

Guangdong Industrial Design City serves as an important driver and engine for the development of both the housekeeping cause and industry.

"We have been focusing on the housekeeping and silver-haired (elderly care) sectors since 2012, continuously introducing domestic and foreign resources to empower the development of this cause and industry," said Feng Jiaming, General Manager of Guangdong Tongtian Technology Industry Development Co., Ltd., the operator of Guangdong Industrial Design City. The park has incubated over 300 housekeeping-related design and R&D enterprises and trained more than 5,000 innovative talents.

Focusing on the service needs of "the elderly and children", a housekeeping service industrial cluster with significant agglomeration effects has taken shape. Currently, about 110 design enterprises in the park specialize in elderly care and maternal-child services, accounting for 36% of the total number of enterprises in the park. In 2024, they contributed 523 million yuan in revenue, a year-on-year increase of 10%.

"The park can now provide a complete set of solutions from front-end market research to back-end product delivery, and even talent training," Feng Jiaming said.

Approximately 110 enterprises in the park specialize in elderly care and maternal-child service design.

Smart Empowerment: From Innovation Patents to Warm Experiences

The value of innovation is ultimately reflected in the seamless transformation from blueprints to daily life.

"Designers have accurately identified user pain points in different scenarios through in-depth cooperation with housekeeping institutions and nursing homes," Feng Jiaming noted. "We even provide comprehensive training courses when delivering products to ensure that innovative achievements not only can be implemented but also be properly used, truly creating value for caregivers and families."

Products are designed based on demand.

This demand-oriented innovation model has spawned fruitful patent achievements and impressive transformation efficiency. As of August 2025, enterprises in the Design City have applied for a total of 11,500 patents in the field of "the elderly and children". Among them, the conversion rate of patents related to aging-friendly renovations reaches as high as 88%, that of maternal and child safety products is 83%, and that of household medical products is 86%. The overall conversion rate of 85% means that on average, 8.5 out of every 10 design innovations can quickly enter thousands of households, providing precise services for specific family life scenarios.

Driven by innovation, traditional housekeeping products have been endowed with an intelligent and humanized technological core. In the "5G Smart Park" exhibition area, Feng Jiaming described the future development direction: this platform not only realizes intelligent management but will also provide strong cloud technology support for the R&D of aging-friendly products, the design of maternal and child supplies, and the development of telemedicine equipment around the housekeeping sector in the future, improving design efficiency.

Baby products embody the meticulous care of technology.

The transformation of products is reflected in the details. In the baby product exhibition area, a hair dryer specially designed for children vividly interprets the meticulous care of technology. "It can keep the air outlet temperature constant at around 30 degrees Celsius, completely eliminating the risk of scalds, and the entire body is anti-scald from all angles," Feng Jiaming introduced. In the exhibition hall, from household medical equipment that safeguards health to smart elderly care products that warm the golden years, the R&D directions of nearly 70% of the enterprises in the park are closely related to housekeeping scenarios. Cutting-edge technology is quietly integrating into every bit of daily life through design.

Design is making housekeeping services safer, more convenient, and more dignified. When innovative design deeply integrates with people's livelihood needs, and when the warm background of the housekeeping cause interweaves with the innovative momentum of the industry, the "Guangdong Housekeeping" project is depicting a vivid picture of high-quality development driven by "dual wheels" in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
